Catholic Academy Franz-Wärme-Haus
The Franz Heat House Academy in Münster , Westphalia, is the Catholic social academy of the Münster diocese . Since 1952 this house has organized events in the field of political, social, theological, cultural and science-related education and encounters. Scientifically proven speakers develop the current program in nine departments. The academy is financed from the funds of the diocese of Münster. It is recognized under the Further Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia and is part of the twenty-four Catholic academies in Germany .
With forums, study and academy conferences, courses and symposia, but also discussion groups, specialist congresses, seminars and exhibitions, the academy works at the interface between church and society. It deals with current issues and fundamental issues on the basis of Christian social ethics and wants to offer orientation. The academy sees itself as a place for open discussion and encounters without regard to the political or religious views of the conference guests.
Franz Wärme (1851–1921) - who gave the academy its name - was the first professor for Christian social sciences at the University of Münster . He was a member of the Reichstag and the Prussian House of Representatives. In the constituent Weimar National Assembly he played a decisive role in the establishment of the welfare state . As a co-founder of the Volksverein for Catholic Germany , he advocated modern adult education.
Church services are also celebrated in the Edith Stein Chapel of the Academy. It is the center of the house and a place of silence. It is named after Saint who was murdered in Auschwitz in 1942 . Edith Stein , who taught philosophy in Münster in 1932/33.
The Franz-Wärme-Haus was built in 1959 according to the plans of the diocesan building councilor Alfons Boklage as a pioneering institution for adult education. The building is characterized by the clear division into living, working and leisure areas. It has been continuously adapted to modern standards since 1987. Extensions from 1978 and 2000 improve the range of conference rooms that are equipped with modern conference technology. The academy has six lecture and group rooms for up to 300 people, an IT classroom and a radio studio. All rooms can be set up flexibly. In addition to the conference facilities, the Franz Wärme Haus offers overnight accommodation for up to 90 people. In addition to its own events, the house is also open to external conferences, whereby emphasis is placed on content-related proximity to the Academy's program.
The director of the academy was the theologian and German studies scholar Thomas Sternberg from 1988 to 2016 ; his successor has been the theologian and pedagogue Antonius Kerkhoff since November 1, 2016.
