Thomas Sternberg (born April 20, 1952 in Elspe ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and former member of the state parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1988 to 2016 he was director of the Catholic Academy Franz-Wärme-Haus . Since November 20, 2015 he has been President of the Central Committee of German Catholics .

Life

Thomas Sternberg completed an apprenticeship as a baker in his parents' bakery and the evening high school to study German , art history and theology in Münster , Rome and Bonn . In 1981 he completed his studies with the degrees of diploma and licentiate (Lic. Theol.) . 1983 followed a dissertation on the poetry of Achim von Arnim at the German faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms-Universität Münster to the Dr. phil. 1988 Sternberg was with a thesis on the social facilities of the 4th to 7th century in the field of theology (Old Church History / Christian Archeology ) at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn to Dr. theol. PhD .

From 1988 to 2016 Sternberg was director of the Catholic-Social Academy Franz-Wärme-Haus in Münster and from 1997 to 2013 spokesman for basic cultural-political issues in the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), since then a member of the main committee. Since 1997 he has been a consultant in Commission VIII (Science) of the German Bishops' Conference . He is a member of the board of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft (KuPoGe). Since 2001 Sternberg has been honorary professor for art and liturgy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University.

On November 20, 2015, he was elected to succeed Alois Glück as President of the Central Committee of German Catholics and was re-elected for four years on November 24, 2017. As such, he is significantly involved in initiating and shaping the discussion process Synodal Way in the Roman Catholic Church in Germany, which started on December 1, 2019.

Thomas Sternberg is married and has five children.

Sternberg has been a member of the CDU since 1974. From 1989 to 2004 he was a member of the culture committee in the city council of Münster. In 1999 he was a councilor in the city council of Münster, where he was cultural policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group from 2002 to 2003. From 2003 to 2007 he was an expert member of the “Culture in Germany” study commission of the German Bundestag.

In the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2005 , he was elected in constituency 85 ( Münster II ) as a direct candidate of the CDU in the state parliament, to which he belonged from June 8, 2005. In the 2010 election , he managed to return to the Düsseldorf state parliament. In the 2012 election , Sternberg moved into the state parliament via the CDU state list (13th place). He was spokesman for his group in the Committee on Culture and the Media and was a member of the Committee on Innovation, Science and Research. On August 20, 2016, Sternberg announced that he would not run again in the 2017 state election.

From 2003 to 2007 he also served as an expert member of the Study Commission "Culture in Germany" of the German Bundestag . In 2012 Sternberg was re-elected as a member of the board of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft (KuPoGe).

Thomas Sternberg has been a member of the state board of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia since 2012.

Committee activities

He has been active in the Broadcasting Council of West German Broadcasting (WDR) since 2010. a. as deputy chairman of the program committee.

Sternberg is also involved in the art academy advisory board of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is a member of the advisory board of the Kunststiftung NRW , the board of trustees of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and the board of the State Music Academy NRW .

He is chairman of the Annette-von-Droste-Gesellschaft e. V., executive board member of the Josef Pieper Foundation, board member of the Society for New Music and member of the board of trustees of the Society for the Promotion of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Cusanuswerk and a member of the board of trustees at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine .

Awards

On May 3, 2018, Sternberg was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .
