August Wilhelm Karl Knobel (born February 7, 1807 in Tzschecheln near Sorau ; died May 25, 1863 in Gießen ) was a Protestant theologian .

He specialized in biblical exegesis and published as a university lecturer - from 1831 at the University of Breslau , from 1839 at the University of Giessen - numerous writings and commentaries on the books of the Old Testament .

Life

Knobel was the son of a farmer. His intellectual talent was recognized early at the grammar school in Sorau and was decisively promoted by his teachers, even after he finished school: after his father's death (April 22, 1828), one of his former teachers made a larger loan available to him so that he could be Knobel Graduated from the University of Wroclaw . There he was registered since 1826 for the study of theology, philosophy, classical philology and history, which he graduated in 1831 as a doctor of philosophy and licentiate in theology.

1838 Knobel received a call to a professorship at the University of Giessen . He filled this position until the end of his life. Knobel remained unmarried and died in Gießen in 1863 after a long illness; his extensive library was included in the holdings of the Giessen University Library .

academic career

After completing his studies, Knobel immediately started teaching in Breslau , initially as a private lecturer , and from 1835 as an associate professor . Both positions were not remunerated; Knobel lived from income as a religion teacher at the teachers' college in Breslau and as a censor for evangelical theological writings in Silesia. This precarious personal situation lasted until 1838.

Nevertheless, he was able to make a name for himself in the specialist field with exegetical works on the Old Testament - his commentary on the book of Kohelet was published in 1836, followed in 1837 by a two-volume work on prophecy of the Hebrews, and in 1838 he was appointed a doctor of theology in Breslau. At the end of 1838, Knobel received an appointment both at the University of Göttingen and, a little later, at the University of Gießen , almost at the same time , which meant that the financially hopeless situation in Breslau was over. In Göttingen he should have taken over the position of the orientalist Heinrich Ewald , who had recently been dismissed as one of the Göttingen seven . Like other university professors, Knobel refrained from stabbing his colleagues in Göttingen, who had been dismissed for political reasons.

On January 1, 1839, Knobel took up the full professorship in Giessen, where he was solely responsible for teaching and exegesis of the Old Testament. The biographer of the personal article in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , Friedrich Hermann Hesse , emphasizes several times that Knobel was an excellent university teacher. For two terms of office, Knobel also held the annually changing office of Rector of the University in Giessen , 1845/46 and 1854/55.

His extensive scientific publications, interpretations and commentaries on various books of the Old Testament in the context of the Brief Exegetical Handbook (KEH) saw repeated editions.
