The library was initially housed in the Sapienzhaus , which burned down in 1534 , and later in the old auditorium and in Hohentübingen Castle. From 1912, was with the now listed Bonatzbau (after the architect Paul Bonatz its own building to be used) for the first time. In 1963, the extension building, which is now used as the main building, was completed right next to the Bonatz building. This, in turn, was accompanied by extension buildings, namely the old wash hall in 1989 and the Ammerbau in 2002 .

The historian Karl August Klüpfel first became second librarian in Tübingen in 1814 and wrote Tübingen's university history in 1849. Other well-known librarians were the philologist Jeremias David Reuss , the writer Hermann Kurz , the orientalist Julius Euting and the geographer Robert Gradmann .

In 1776 the UB had a stock of 15,000 titles. This increased to 60,000 by 1822, to 541,000 by 1912, and 1,204,000 by 1963. In 2004 there were 3,400,000 and in 2012 around 3,712,480 titles.

The University Library of Tübingen looks after several special collection areas within the framework of the special collection area plan of the German Research Foundation . The domestic and foreign literature in the fields of theology, religious studies and the ancient Orient is collected with a high degree of completeness. The special collection area criminology is supervised together with the institute for criminology at the University of Tübingen. In the field of theology and religious studies, the University Library of Tübingen is also responsible for the virtual specialist library for theology and religious studies . Tübingen University Library was also responsible for the special collection areas of the Middle East and South Asia until 1997 and 2004 respectively.

In addition, the collections of the university library contain museum objects from the 17th and 20th centuries (furniture, etc.), the exhibition of which is organized together with the Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT .
