The Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT is a central facility of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , which has been researching the university collections since October 2006 , organizing them together, professionalizing them, providing an exposure laboratory for the university in changing exhibitions and the collections for research , teaching and education usable and accessible to a wider public.

history

Poupou ( New Zealand ), wall panel with ancestral representation of the Maori, mid-18th century, 1769 Gift to natural scientist Joseph Banks on the first South Sea voyage from James Cook, ethnological collection of the University of Tübingen
Ceramics from the Schussenried Group , from a wetland settlement on the Federsee ( Upper Swabia ), 4200-3700 BC. BC, UNESCO World Heritage Site " Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps ", Collection of Younger Prehistory from the University of Tübingen

The 540-year-old University of Tübingen, with its rich research , teaching and display collections, has an outstanding collection of objects relating to the history of science and culture . These extraordinary and technically highly differentiated collections are characterized above all by their age, their disciplinary diversity and universality. The MUT University Museum acts as an umbrella organization for around 70 collections (including around 135 individual bundles and partial collections) from the University of Tübingen - the largest number at a German university .

Early on, the teaching and research objects were made accessible to the public. For example, the graphic collection at the Kunsthistorisches Institut was created in 1897 , the exhibition of the palaeontological collection - one of the largest and most important - in 1902 and finally the museum in Hohentübingen Castle in 1997 with its partly unique cultural and ancient treasures.

organization

The MUT is the only university museum in the world to house artifacts from two different UNESCO World Heritage Sites . The collection of the Younger Prehistory holds finds from wetland settlements that have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage " Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps " since 2011 . The oldest surviving figural works of art and musical instruments of mankind - mammoth ivory figures and fragments of bone flutes - are part of the collection of the Elderly Prehistory. These come from the Vogelherd cave ( Swabian Alb ), which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage " Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Alb " since 2017 .

In addition, the ethnological collection houses a Maori pedigree - called Poupou - the world's only architectural part from a Maori meeting house from the first James Cook expedition (1768–1771) to the South Seas. In addition to the university's numerous individual collections, there are a large number of singular objects that do not appear in the collections that have already been inventoried and yet play a prominent role as scientific artefacts, as the materialized cultural and research history of the university. Sifting through all of the holdings, securing them and recording them in a common collection database is one of the greatest challenges for the museum and the basic conditions for continued use of the collections, along with the organization of a satisfactory storage situation.

The "Recommendations on Scientific Collections as Research Infrastructures" (Drs. 10464-11) published by the Science Council in January 2011 take the organizational structure of the MUT as a model for other university custodians . Since the 2016/17 winter semester, MUT has also been the holder of the general museological master’s degree profile "Museum & Collections" at the University of Tübingen, in which nine different disciplines participate.

Currently, under the direction of Ernst Seidl , in addition to the respective specialist curators and employees in the individual collections - for example in Hohentübingen Castle - four research assistants , one academic volunteer , four administrative employees , three student assistants , three volunteers ( FSJ culture) and irregularly work Interns at MUT. In addition, there are around 15 management and supervisory staff recruited from the scientific disciplines at the museum in Hohentübingen Castle, who are also active in museum education .
