Wilhelm Schlenk
Wilhelm Johann Schlenk (born March 22, 1879 in Munich , † April 29, 1943 in Tübingen ) was a German chemist .
life and work
Schlenk completed a chemistry degree in Munich, which he completed in 1905 with a dissertation under Oskar Piloty . After a brief activity in the chemical industry, he returned to Munich, where he completed his habilitation in 1909 . In 1913 he accepted a call to the University of Jena, from there to Vienna in 1918 and to Berlin in 1921 as Emil Fischer's successor . After the National Socialists came to power, he remained true to his democratic convictions and kept his distance from the regime. Therefore, he was transferred to a chair at the University of Tübingen in 1935.
In 1925 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Since 1922 he was a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and since 1935 a foreign member . In 1933 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . From the German Chemical Society , of which he was chairman from 1926 to 1928, he was expelled in 1942 because of a lack of loyalty to the regime.
Schlenk was one of the founders of organometallic chemistry and was particularly concerned with the air-sensitive organolithium, sodium and magnesium compounds as well as the chemistry of the stable free radicals discovered by Moses Gomberg .
Are named after him, the Schlenk equilibrium of Grignard reagents and Schlenk technique for chemical operations excluding air.
