Linguist Arno Ruoff

Arno Ruoff (born June 26, 1930 ; † 2010 in Wolfenhausen ) was a German linguist . He was considered to be the best expert on the spoken language in Baden-Württemberg . He had earned this award through the immense number of interviews with speakers of all ages and classes since the 1950s in Baden-Württemberg, Bavarian Swabia and Liechtenstein .

Life

For Arno Ruoff, the beginning of his preoccupation with the dialects of southwest Germany is inextricably linked with the name Eberhard Zwirner . When he started to record the German dialects and colloquial German on tapes in the early 1950s , Arno Ruoff was right there. From these beginnings, the "Tübingen Language Center in Southwest Germany", founded and directed by Arno Ruoff, later emerged. Little by little, a good 2,000 recordings from more than 500 locations came together. Today they are summarized in the Arno-Ruoff-Archive , which is part of the archive of everyday cultures of the Ludwig-Uhland-Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies and the Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT . The building on Biesinger Strasse with the Arno-Ruoff-Archiv burned down in connection with the loss of archive material in March 2017.

In 1973 - after 20 years of voice recording - Arno Ruoff founded the "Idiomatica" series, and in order to methodically relieve all subsequent work, he wrote the first volume himself. “Basics and methods of studying spoken language” - so the title - has become a standard work. In the following decades this first Idiomatica band was to be followed by 16 more. Today, more than 120 publications can be traced back to the Tübingen office. This number alone indicates the importance of the “Tübingen School” under Arno Ruoff for dialect research .
