The Tübingen Professorengalerie is a collection of paintings from the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . It contains the commissioned portraits of 330 portrayed former professors , chancellors , rectors and other people associated with the university. The painting collection is part of the Museum of the University of Tübingen (MUT) and is presented by the university in various buildings: in the "Small Senate", in the "Large Senate", in the university auditorium and in the prince's room at Hohentübingen Castle .

history

The oldest portraits in the collection were made in the 16th century. The Tübingen Professorengalerie is particularly impressive because of its temporal closeness from the end of the 16th century to the present day.

The reason for its creation was the university's 100th anniversary in 1578. However, no tradition of a continuous continuation of the gallery was in sight. Around 1590, the rhetorician Erhard Cellius (1546–1606) commissioned a large number of paintings. He not only had acting colleagues in the picture, but also had deceased professors portrayed according to specifications.

The first rector of the University of Tübingen was Johannes Nauclerus, also known by name as Johannes Vergenhans , from 1477 to 1478 , a close confidante of Count Eberhards im Bart , the founder of the University of Tübingen . After his rectorate, Johannes Nauclerus became the university's long-term chancellor. A posthumously made portrait of Johannes Nauclerus exists in the professors' gallery.

One of the first paintings in the collection in the Tübingen Professorengalerie , which also includes portraits of women, was the portrait of Jakob Degens painted in oil .

The portrait painters of the Tübingen Professorengalerie, since the beginning of the late 16th century until today, are listed below in this article with their dates of life.

Professor painting

Among the portraits of women are, for example, those of the Vice Rector of the University of Tübingen and Vice President of the West German Rectors' Conference Ilse Kunert , the professor's wife Johanna Friederike Gaum and, since 1993, Professor Evamarie Sander .

There is also a professors 'gallery in Giessen , a professors ' gallery in Greifswald , a professors 'gallery in Jena , a professors' gallery in Basel and similar collections of paintings at other universities.

The following painters painted portraits for the Tübingen Professorengalerie:

Woodcuts from Imagines professorum Tubingensium

Some portraits of the Tübingen Professorengalerie were published by the Tübingen professor and publisher Erhard Cellius (1546-1606) in the book Imagines professorum Tubingensium with a total of 37 woodcuts in 1596 in Tübingen.

The woodcuts come from Jakob Lederlein , who worked from 1575 to 1600. They show the professors who were teaching in Tübingen at the time. These are each presented in a frame, mostly behind a parapet and often with a book in hand and sometimes with attributes of their discipline.

The special thing about this book and its woodcuts is that the scholars at a university had themselves presented as one.
