Life

Funk went to school in Ellwangen and then studied from 1859 at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen first philosophy and theology, later also philology and political economy. In 1863 he received his doctorate in philosophy. In 1864 he was ordained a priest in the diocese of Rottenburg . From 1865 to 1866 he studied in Paris and then went to Tübingen. In 1875 he became a professor of church history specializing in patrology and Christian archeology at the University of Tübingen.

Funk was one of the experts in ancient church history and patrology. His textbook on church history saw numerous editions and was regarded as a standard work for a long time after his death. Funk made an obvious effort to counteract the trend towards overvaluation of medieval theology at the time.

In 1890 he was raised to the personal nobility by being awarded the Knight of Honor Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown . In 1903 he received the commentary cross, 2nd class of the Frederick Order .
