Johann (es) Osiander (born April 22, 1657 in Tübingen ; † October 18, 1724 ibid) was a German philologist, diplomat and Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of Johann Adam Osiander was able to attend the University of Tübingen at the age of fourteen through early training . Here he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in 1676 and then completed a theological degree. After completing his basic theological studies, he went on a scholarly journey in 1684, which took him to the University of Altdorf , to Nuremberg , to the University of Heidelberg , to Darmstadt , Frankfurt am Main , to the University of Gießen , to the University of Marburg , to Kassel , Hanover , Hamburg , Switzerland , France and Holland .

After returning to his hometown in 1686, he became an associate professor of the Hebrew language and geography at the University of Tübingen. In 1688 he took over the full professorship of Greek language and philosophy, was active as a negotiator in the war of 1688 and was appointed to the secret war council in 1690 because of the skill he used there to protect Tübingen and Stuttgart. In 1692 Ephorus became the theological monastery in Tübingen , in 1697 prelate of Königsbronn and 1699 prelate of Hirsau , based in Tübingen.

Osiander received 1703 from August of Poland and Saxony the title of Konsistorialrats and was by Charles XII. appointed by Sweden to the church council. In 1708 he was appointed consistorial assessor in Stuttgart by Duke Eberhard Ludwig , which entrusted him with the management of all of the Württemberg churches and schools. After he had also participated in diplomatic missions in Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Prussia, Italy and England, he became a real privy councilor in 1713 and retired to his estate in the last years of his life. He had made a special contribution to the Württemberg regional church with the introduction of confirmation in 1722/23.
