Life

As the son of a painter, Johann Georg Dramburg found his first training as a painter from his father. For further training he traveled to Holland, after which he trained with Johann Friedrich Trescher in Frankfurt am Main . From 1670 he lived in Tübingen, where there were comparatively good earning opportunities due to the presence of the ever changing circle of rich students. In 1673 Dramburg applied for academic citizenship, initially unsuccessfully, but after a renewed application in 1680 he succeeded in obtaining this coveted right. He evidently had good relations with the ducal court in Stuttgart because Duke Friedrich Karl von Württemberg-Winnental - as the financier - ensured job opportunities for him. Although he did not make a masterpiece, Dramburg received commissions for 7 portraits for the Tübingen Professorengalerie in the years 1684–1690.

“The portrait of the elderly lawyer Johann Andreas Frommann alone clearly shows Dutch training in its light painterly treatment and is noteworthy for its training. The somewhat demanding posture and the illusionistic reference to the visitor show for the first time baroque features in the Tübingen portrait painting. "
