Werner Fleischhauer

Werner Fleischhauer (born January 14, 1903 in Stuttgart ; † February 3, 1997 in Stuttgart) was a German art historian , director of the Stuttgart Castle Museum from 1943 to 1945 and director of the Württemberg State Museum from 1952 to 1968 . His numerous publications deal in particular with the history of art in Württemberg.

Career

Fleischhauer was the son of the court art dealer Felix Fleischhauer and attended the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Stuttgart before studying art history in Tübingen, Munich and Frankfurt am Main. One of his professors at the Art History Institute in Frankfurt am Main was Rudolf Kautzsch , who had a lasting impact on him. Fleischhauer came to the Stuttgart Castle Museum in 1925 as a scientific assistant, where he became curator in 1934, chief curator in 1937 and director from 1943 to 1945. After founding the Württemberg State Museum, he became chief curator in 1948 and was its director from 1952 to 1968. In 1961 Fleischhauer was appointed honorary professor for art history at the University of Tübingen. He dealt with art historical source research well into his old age and published articles when he was over 80 years old. From 1988 he spent the last years of his life in the Stuttgart Augustinum .

Works

In the course of his professional activity and beyond, Fleischhauer has published numerous works on Württemberg art history. His first work in 1928 was a monograph on the Stuttgart painter Philipp Friedrich Hetsch . The essay The Paintings in the Stuttgart Lusthaus (1932) was of great importance. His later works were then devoted to more general subjects, e.g. B. The Portrait in Württemberg 1760–1860 (1939) or The Period of Classicism and Romanticism in Swabia (1952). His main works are Baroque in the Duchy of Württemberg (1958), Renaissance in the Duchy of Württemberg (1971) and The History of the Art Chamber of the Dukes of Württemberg in Stuttgart (1976), some of which appeared in several editions and were accompanied by other related articles.
