Life

Gabriel Karg probably came to Stuttgart in 1591, where his father worked on the painting of the new pleasure house and was also involved in this work. Later, unlike his father, Gabriel Karg probably only painted portraits. In 1594 he probably painted an oil portrait of Johann Magirus , of which he made a very similar portrait again in 1604, labeled “G. Karg ”is signed. In search of a correspondingly large number of wealthy customers, he then settled in Tübingen, where he was matriculated in 1601 as "illuminista". The great competition among painters in Tübingen prompted him to leave Tübingen at the latest in 1606 and return to Augsburg. Six portraits from his work in Württemberg have been preserved in recent times, two of which are in the Tübingen Professors' Gallery.
