The roots of FCR 2001 Duisburg lie with FC Rumeln-Kaldenhausen, which was founded on January 9, 1955 and founded a women's team in 1977. This rose in 1990 to the then second-rate Regionalliga West and three years later to the Bundesliga. During the 1997/98 season the club was renamed FCR Duisburg 55. In 1998 the club won the DFB Cup and two years later the championship. On June 8, 2001, the women's football department of the FCR became independent as FCR 2001 Duisburg.

In 2009 and 2010, the club won the DFB Cup again. The lionesses' greatest success was winning the 2009 UEFA Women's Cup against the Russian club Zvezda 2005 Perm . On January 23, 2013, the association had to file for bankruptcy at the Duisburg District Court . In order to secure match operations, mergers with MSV Duisburg and VfB Homberg , with which the PCC stadium was shared, were considered.

Establishment of the department

As of January 1, 2014, the department consisted of the second team and the junior women's teams (U-17, U-15, U-13) of FCR 2001 Duisburg . The first team is outsourced to MSV Duisburg GmbH & Co. KGaA . The DFB gave the necessary approval for the transfer of gaming rights on December 27, 2013. Members of the Rumeln 2001 Duisburg e. V. had to leave the club and joined the Meidericher Spielverein 02 e. V. Duisburg . All players - with the exception of Gülhiye Cengiz ( retired ), Lieke Martens ( Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC ) and Jackie Groenen ( Chelsea Ladies ) - strengthened the MSV like the employees. The "shell" of the football club Rumeln 2001 Duisburg e. V. went into bankruptcy on January 1, 2014.

After only three wins in the 2014/15 season , the club was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga North . There the Duisburg team managed to get back up and set a new league record with 22 wins from 22 games. After coach Inka Grings announced her resignation at the end of the 2016/2017 season at the beginning of April 2017, the MSV appointed Christian Franz-Pohlmann as the new head coach from the 2017/2018 season. After about half a year, Franz-Pohlmann was released from Duisburg on February 14, 2018, the previous assistant coach Robert Augustin took over the post on an interim basis until Thomas Gerstner was signed .
