For the 2016/17 season, RB Leipzig, in addition to its previous involvement in the girls' area, also entered women's football. After initially considering a syndicate with Leipzig's FC 07 , it became known that they would instead compete directly in the fourth-class state league of Saxony with an independent team. The squad initially consisted of 17 players from FFV Leipzig , five of their own youngsters and one athlete from the reserve of FF USV Jena . On the part of the Saxon Football Association , whose youth training center RB Leipzig has taken over, they expect to reach the Bundesliga within three to five years.
The team played their first competitive game on August 7, 2016, when they defeated SV Johannstadt 90 away 7-0 in the state cup . Ten minutes before the start of the first league game on August 21, 2016, the Bischofswerda FV 08 declared that it would not play against RB Leipzig in protest against the association's decision. Together with the league opponents, the club agreed to repeat games that have already been played and to meet certain conditions - including the obligation to have a certain number of youth players in the starting line-up. The team was later excluded from the cup competition because it had competed there as RB Leipzig, but not as a syndicate as stated in the draw. The season ended undefeated as champions. Due to a lack of registrations for the regional league and withdrawals in this, the relegation games actually required were also omitted.
On the first match day of the 2017/18 Regionalliga , the first competitive defeat took place with the 0: 6 against the Magdeburg FFC. After the season, which ended in fourth place, head coach Sebastian Popp left the club for professional reasons.
For the 2018/19 season , Katja Greulich , previously employed by the Bundesliga club FF USV Jena , was hired as the new coach. The season itself went a little better, with 18 wins and 4 defeats they ended up in third place. By winning the Sachsenpokal , RB Leipzig qualified for the following DFB Cup for the first time .
The season 2019/20 was after 15 match days by the Covid-19 pandemic first underground and later by resolution of an extraordinary DFB Bundestag canceled. Since the originally planned relegation games, with which the promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga should be determined, were also omitted, the RB, which had remained unbeaten until then and could win 14 of the 15 games, was automatically determined as the direct promoted team.
Venue
The home games of the RB women are played on the Gontardweg sports complex in the northeast of Leipzig.
