Arminia Bielefeld (full name: Deutscher Sportclub Arminia Bielefeld eV ) is a sports club from Bielefeld . The women's football department has existed since 1975. The first team played in the 2nd Bundesliga since its promotion in 2019, in which the Bielefeld women playedfrom 2016 to 2018.

history

Early years (1975 to 2009)

In 1975 a department for women's and girls' football was established. After initial difficulties in finding enough players for the teams, the DSC girls became regular district champions and cup winners in the late 1970s. In 1980 the women's team finally achieved promotion to the district league. The relegation followed in 1982 when numerous pregnancies resulted in staff shortages within the team. Nevertheless, the immediate resurgence succeeded, which was followed by a march into the state league. In the youth field, Arminia could not provide any teams between 1985 and 1995 due to a lack of players.

The first team succeeded in 1990 for the first time the promotion to the then third-class Verbandsliga Westfalen , the highest Westphalian women's league. After a temporary relegation, the Arminines succeeded in getting promoted back to the association league in 2003. The team was now able to establish itself in the Association League, which was renamed the Westphalia League in 2008. One year after the promotion, Markus Wuckel , who had played for the men's Arminia team and completed four missions for the GDR national soccer team , took over as coach.

Path to the 2nd Bundesliga (2009 to 2016)

In 2009 and 2010, the Bielefeld women were runner-up behind the 1. FFC Recklinghausen and Sportfreunde Siegen . The team achieved their greatest success in the cup in 2010 when they reached the final of the Westphalia Cup . The final in the SchücoArena was won by the guests of 1. FFC Recklinghausen 4-1. This qualified the team for the women's DFB Cup . In the first round , Arminia met second division SV Victoria Gersten and lost 1:10.

At the beginning of the 2010s, the Bielefeld women slipped back into the mediocre Westphalia League. In the 2014/14 season, the team took over the championship lead on the ninth matchday thanks to the former Polish first division players Kamila Kmiecik and Symela Ciesielska and did not give them up. Fortuna Freudenberg was beaten 13-0 during the season. In the end, the team secured the championship and promotion to the Regionalliga West on the third last match day with an 8-0 win at Westfalia Hagen .

In the 2015/16 regional league season , the Bielefeld women were once again at the top of the table and secured promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga on the third last matchday with a 4-0 win over the second team of MSV Duisburg . During the entire season, the Bielefeld women remained unbeaten and scored 124 goals, 34 of which went to Maxine Birker , who was the top scorer , while Kamila Kmiecik scored 32 goals. The Sportfreunde Siegen were defeated 10: 1 over the course of the season, and SV Budberg even 11: 0.

Present (since 2016)

With promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga North, the team moved to the Queller Waldstadion. In the DFB-Pokal 2016/17 the Bielefeld women reached the round of 16 after victories at FC Viktoria 1889 Berlin (0: 5) and against FSV Gütersloh in 2009 (6: 2). There, the team was defeated by the Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg just 0-2. Meanwhile, the Bielefeld women never faced relegation in the second division season 2016/17 and reached fifth place. The following season 2017/18 was about qualifying for the single-track 2nd Bundesliga. Throughout the season, the Bielefeld women always occupied a place sufficient to qualify, before the team slipped to relegation rank eight after a 1: 4 defeat at the second team of VfL Wolfsburg on the last match day.

The team stayed together for the most part despite relegation and secured the championship two game days before the end of the season after a 3-1 win at SV Bökendorf . Sarah Grünheid was the top scorer in the league with 43 goals. Since no team from Regionalliga Nord applied for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, the championship meant direct promotion. The 2019/20 second division season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The descent was suspended, from which the Bielefeld women benefited as bottom of the table. In the DFB Cup 2019/20 , the team reached the semi-finals, but failed there at VfL Wolfsburg.

Stadion

Since the promotion in 2019, Arminia's women's team has played its home games in the EDImedienArena. The stadium is located in the Windflöte district . It is played there on hybrid turf.

For many years the Stadtheide sports field on Schillerstraße was the sporting home of Arminia's women's team. The team shared the artificial turf pitch with the SCE Rot-Weiss Bielefeld club . In the 2nd Bundesliga, the Bielefeld women played from 2016 to 2018 in the Waldstadion in the Quelle district . The stadium is located on Marienfelder Strasse east of the Quelle comprehensive school. The move to Quelle was necessary because no artificial turf pitches are allowed in the 2nd Bundesliga. Further users of the Waldstadion are TuS Quelle and various youth teams from Arminia Bielefeld. For the DFB Cup game against SV Victoria Gersten, the Bielefeld women avoided the Rußheide stadium , as no games on artificial turf are allowed in the women's DFB Cup. The Westphalia Cup final in 2010 against 1. FFC Recklinghausen and various DFB Cup games, however, took place in the SchücoArena.

More teams

The second women's team made it into the national league in 2009, which had to be left down after only one year. In 2019 he was promoted to the regional league again. The B-Juniors played in the Westphalia League from 2010 to 2014. After two promotions in a row, he was promoted to the Regionalliga West in 2019 .
