The Women's Regional Football League West is the third highest division in women's football in North Rhine-Westphalia . The league is subordinate to the West German Football and Athletics Association .
history
The Regionalliga West was founded in 1985 and was the first cross-association league in German women's football. In the first few years, the clubs that were among the top German clubs at that time, such as TSV Siegen , SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach and KBC Duisburg, dominated . The best-placed team from the three associations Westphalia, Lower Rhine and Middle Rhine made it to the final round of the German championship . Between 1986 and 1990 a team from the Regionalliga West was German champions every time. In 1988 and 1990, the Regionalliga West also provided the German runner-up. The 1989/90 season was all about qualifying for the newly introduced Bundesliga . Four places were available, which were taken by the three top clubs mentioned at the beginning and VfB Rheine . At that time, Rheine surprisingly achieved second place as a climber. The dominance of the western clubs was reflected in the first Bundesliga season , in which the western quartet took places one, two, three and five in the northern group. Only the Schmalfelder SV could break into the phalanx.
After the introduction of the Bundesliga, the Regionalliga West was only the second highest division. The regional league champion (in a few years also the runner-up) had to compete with the champions of the regional leagues North and Northeast in a promotion round for two promotion places. Between 1990 and 2004, a team from Regionalliga West made it into the upper house eight times. However, more clubs failed in these same promotion rounds. In 1991, SV Grün-Weiß Brauweiler was the first team to climb and reached the final straight away. To this day, the Brauweiler women are the best Bundesliga promoters of all time. The most successful clubs of the 1990s were the SpVgg Oberaußem-Fortuna with four and the SG Wattenscheid 09 with three championships. As the last regional league champion, SG Essen-Schönebeck rose to the Bundesliga in 2004.
In the summer of 2004, the two-pronged 2. Bundesliga was launched. Wattenscheid 09, FC Gütersloh 2000 , SpVgg Oberaußem-Fortuna and SG Lütgendortmund qualified from the regional league . The TuS Köln rrh. was athletically qualified, but did not participate. The second team of FCR 2001 Duisburg also refrained from moving up. Thus the Regionalliga West is only the third highest division.
mode
The Regionalliga West consists of fourteen (up to the 2007/08 season twelve) teams that compete against each other in the league system . A win is rewarded with three, a draw with one point. The team with the highest points was champions until 2017 and will be promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . From 2019 the five regional league champions and one regional league champion will determine the promoted players to the 2nd Bundesliga in three drawn pairings with a return game. The participating regional league champion is determined using a performance table of the regional associations, which includes the performance of the clubs in the last three seasons in the first and second Bundesliga. If the champion of the promotion games waives his right to promotion or if the promotion is denied to the champion by the DFB , the loser moves up. If the loser is also denied promotion, no team will be promoted. In contrast to men's football, second teams can also be promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. So far, in contrast to the regional leagues North and Southwest, this has not happened yet.
On the other side of the table, the two to six last-placed teams are relegated (depending on the number of relegated teams from the 2nd Bundesliga). The three champions of the association leagues Westphalia, Lower Rhine and Middle Rhine rise accordingly. If a club withdraws its team before the start of the season or during the season, it is automatically placed at the end of the table and counts as the first relegated team.
