Association League (IV)

The women's regional football league southwest is the third highest division in women's football in southwest Germany ( Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland ) . The league is subordinate to the Football Regional Association Southwest .

history

The league was founded in 1996 as Oberliga Südwest. At the time, the Oberliga Südwest was the second highest division and the champions had the chance to qualify for the Bundesliga through a promotion round. The first champion was the SC 07 Bad Neuenahr , which also made the promotion. After Bad Neuenahr, the former first division club TuS Ahrbach became champions twice in a row. In the 1997/98 season, Ahrbach even won all season games, but failed as well as in the following year in the promotion round. After another runner-up in 2000 - the reserve of 1. FC Saarbrücken became champions - the Ahrbachers slipped back into midfield. Also in the 1999/00 season, SC Siegelbach managed the feat of not losing a game and still only finishing third. After that the old master TuS Niederkirchen became master twice in a row. Only in the second attempt the TuS managed to rise again after the TuS could win all season games. Also in 2002, the newly promoted FSV Viktoria Jägersburg was runner-up and best promoted player of all time. In 2003 1. FC Saarbrücken managed to gain direct promotion and became the first club to become champions of the regional league with two teams. The year 2004 brought a curiosity. Niederkirchen was relegated from the Bundesliga again and secured the championship. In the promotion round, the team failed. Although the TuS was qualified for the newly founded 2nd Bundesliga , the Palatinate renounced the new class and did a "lap of honor". Thus only Jägersburg moved into the new lower house. A year later, Niederkirchen followed suit. With five championships, the TuS is the league's record champion.

So far, every relegated team has been able to secure the regional league championship. The only exception was in the debut season of TuS Wörrstadt , which was only second. The first German women's soccer champion even slipped into the association league for a year in 2002. SC Siegelbach has played in all seasons so far.

mode

The Regionalliga Südwest currently consists of 14 teams that compete against each other in the league system . A win is rewarded with three, a draw with one point. The team with the highest points was champions until 2017 and will be promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . Since 2019, the five regional league champions and one regional league champion have been determining who have been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in three drawn pairings with a return game. The participating regional league champion is determined using a performance table of the regional associations, which includes the performance of the clubs in the last three seasons in the first and second Bundesliga. If the master renounces his participation or the winner of the promotion games waives his right of promotion or the winner is denied promotion by the DFB , the loser moves up. If the loser is denied promotion or is not promoted, no team will be promoted. In contrast to men's football, second teams can also be promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. This happened for the first time in 2006, when the second team of SC 07 Bad Neuenahr could celebrate championship and promotion.

On the other side of the table, the last two teams are relegated to the respective association league. The relegated teams are replaced by the champions of the Rhineland, Southwest and Saarland leagues. If two or more teams are relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Regionalliga Südwest, the relegation from the Regionalliga increases accordingly.

If a club withdraws its team before the start of the season or during the season, it is automatically placed at the end of the table and is considered a relegated team.
