German Football Championship (women)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Since 1974 the DFB has hosted a championship in women's football . After the lifting of the women's football ban in 1970, this was the second milestone in the development of German women's football. From 1990 the women's Bundesliga was played, first up to 1997 in the north and south seasons, so that there were still finals for the championship, but since 1997/98 the Bundesliga has been single-track.

mode

The procedure for determining the German master was different. At the first event, the sixteen association champions were divided into four groups of four teams each. One of the four teams acted as the host of the tournament, in which each team competed against every other team. The four group winners reached the final tournament. There was initially a semi-final. The losers played for third place, the winners played for the championship.

From 1975 onwards the game was played exclusively in the knockout system . The pairings were each drawn by lots and played in a two-legged manner. The final was played in one game except for 1977, 1978 and 1979.

When the Bundesliga was founded in 1990, the mode was changed again. Now the group winners and runners-up of the north and south groups have reached the final round. The semi-finals were played back and forth. The final was played in one game.

After the Bundesliga continued on a single track in 1997, no more final games are played. The team with the highest points is the German champions.
