The FC Hellas Marpingen is a sports club from the Saarland community Marpingen . The club, founded in 1919, became known for its football department . The first women's team became German runners-up in 1978, while the first men's team played in Saarland's highest amateur league for many years.
Women's soccer
In 1975 the Hellas women were able to qualify for the German championship for the first time , but failed in the first round at Bayern Munich . Two years later , the team just failed at SC 07 Bad Neuenahr .
The greatest success in the club's history was achieved in 1978 . After victories over TSV Wulsdorf , Bayern Munich and Kickers Offenbach , FC Hellas was the first and only Saarland club to reach the final of the German championship. The first leg against SC 07 Bad Neuenahr was lost 2-0. In the second leg in Eppelborn , the Marpinges took a 1-0 lead with an own goal . Five minutes later, Christel Schikofsky failed with a penalty kick against Bad Neuenahr's goalkeeper Maria Breuer.
The Hellas women qualified twice as Saarland champions for the German championship, but failed both times in the first round. After that, the team could no longer keep up with the top. Today FC Hellas does not have a women's team.
Men's soccer
The men of FC Hellas Marpingen belonged to the Saarland Amateur League for many years after the war. After a brief interlude in the 1948/49 season, the team was able to establish itself in the league for twelve years from 1951. In 1954 the Marpingers were one point behind SV Ludweiler-Warndt runner-up, in 1957 and 1958 third places could be achieved. 1963 followed the descent from the amateur league. After the team disappeared to the district level in 1971 , new successes were achieved at the end of the 1970s. Two rises in a row brought Hellas 1979 in the state league, before 1986 the return to the association league Saarland could be celebrated. The class in which the team mostly fought relegation was held for twelve years. After further seasons in the association league (from 2006 to 2008 and from 2013 to 2015), FC Hellas plays today (as of: 2015/16 season) in the eight-class regional league north.
