The women's football department of the Benfica Lisbon sports club (officially: Sport Lisboa e Benfica ) from Portugal was founded in 2018.

history

Benfica began building its women's football department in spring 2018, two years after local rivals Sporting Lisbon entered professional women's football. The multiple selection player Sílvia Rebelo was chosen as the first captain of the new team . In August 2018, an invitation tournament was won in Guadalajara , Spain .

Benfica started playing for the Portuguese championship for the 2018/19 season in the second division (Segunda Divisão) on September 16, 2018 with a 28-0 opener win against UD Ponte Frielas . The Brazilian Darlene Souza became the most successful goalscorer of the game with eight goals. On January 30, 2019, Benfica conceded their first goal in a competitive match, in a 5-1 victory in the cup against Marítimo Funchal at the stadium of Câmara de Lobos . Benfica experienced their first competitive defeat on March 24, 2019 in front of a home crowd in the first leg of the cup semi-finals after a 2-1 defeat against Sporting Braga . This defeat was negated by a 4-2 win in the second leg on April 20, 2019 and thus the entry into the cup final as the first second division team to be completed. The Benfica players were able to end the first season in their history with a first title win, when they became the first second division side to win the Portuguese Association Cup on May 18, 2019 after beating Valadares Gaia FC 4-0 at the Estádio Nacional . The goals were scored by Darlene Souza (penalty), Yasmim Ribeiro , Ana Vitória and Evy Pereira (penalty). On June 23, 2019, Benfica ended its first season with record statistics of 34 wins in 36 competitive games (league and cup), one draw and one defeat, and a goal difference of 452 goals from only 6 goals. The Brazilian Darlene Souza was the outstanding goalscorer with a total of 108 goals in the league and cup. Unbeaten, the club secured the title of the second division and thus promotion to the upper house of Portuguese women's football.

On September 8, 2019, Benfica secured the Portuguese Super Cup for the first time with a 1-0 win (goal: Pauleta ) over Sporting Braga.

Derby de Lisboa

On March 30, 2019, the women's teams from SL Benfica and Sporting CP met for their first derby match at Estádio do Restelo as part of a charity match for the victims of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique ; Sporting won 1-0 after a penalty from Joana Marchão . The match took place in front of a new record crowd in Portuguese women's football of 15,204 spectators.
