The women's football department of the Sporting Lisbon sports club (officially: Sporting Clube de Portugal ) from Portugal was first established in 1991 and revived in 2016.

history

Sporting founded a section for women's football for the first time in 1991, which was closed again in August 1995 after four years. In 2016 the club returned to women's football and immediately took over the dominance in all national competitions, both in the professional and junior areas. The "Leoas" (lionesses) were able to enter the first division (Primeira Divisão) of the national championship immediately and win the national title triple in their premiere season 2016/17. They defended the double in the following season and have so far been unbeaten in both championship and cup competitions. They suffered their first defeat in a competitive match on August 22, 2017 when they made their debut at European level in qualifying for the UEFA Women's Champions League against the Kazakh club BIIK Kazygurt . In Portugal they were defeated in the game for the Sporting Braga Super Cup on September 9, 2018 , but only in a penalty shoot-out. They experienced their first defeat in regular time in the national championship competition on December 9, 2018 in their own stadium after a 2-0 defeat against league rivals Sporting Braga.

Derby de Lisboa

On March 30, 2019, the women's teams from SL Benfica and Sporting CP met for their first derby match at Estádio do Restelo as part of a charity match for the victims of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique ; Sporting won 1-0 after a penalty from Joana Marchão . The match took place in front of a new record crowd in Portuguese women's football of 15,204 spectators.
