The women's football department of the Rio Preto EC existed from 2008 to 2019 and was one of the most successful teams in the national championship for women's football in Brazil, which has been held since 2013 .

history

founding

The founding of the women's soccer department of the Rio Preto EC is linked to the couple Dorotéia de Souza Oliveira and Francisco "Chicão" Reguera Inojo (* 1957 in Bálsamo ), a former amateur soccer player and a local salesperson in the building materials trade in São José do Rio Preto who offers a training opportunity for looking for their three football-loving daughters. Because there was still no women's football organized in clubs in the provincial hinterland of the Paulista State at the end of the 20th century, the couple founded their own sports promotion project with the Associação Esportiva Realidade Jovem in 1996, with which they finally cooperated with the traditional local club Rio in 2008 Preto EC and thus established its section for women's football, which has since been administered by Dorotéia as president and coached by Chicão. In parallel to the athletic training, the club also guarantees academic training for junior players in a specially opened girls' school, through which it receives financial subsidies from the municipality.

In the first few years of its existence, the women's football department was primarily limited to finding and promoting talent. From among the players she trained, Chico's youngest daughter Darlene (* 1990) and Raquel Fernandes (* 1991) made the leap into Brazilian professional women's football, which is still being developed. Only after a sufficiently large reservoir of self-trained players had been able to draw on, did the Rio Preto EC venture into regular gaming in 2010. Since then, the team has been one of the big names in the São Paulo state championship , the strongest in Brazil, and was also one of the first to take part in the national women's football championship that was launched in 2013 .

successes

In the 2015 season, the women of the Rio Preto EC won the national championship title after a victory in the finals (1: 0, 1: 1) against the São José EC , the first ever for the club as a whole. In 2016 they made it to the championship final again, in which they only had to admit defeat to the CR Flamengo due to the away goal regulation . But after a victory (1-0, 0-0) over the newly formed women's team of Santos FC , the national championship was won for the first time. As seventh place in the CBF points ranking, the Rio Preto EC was able to compete immediately in the newly established first division (Série A1) of the national championship in the 2017 season and also advance to the semifinals in this fourth participation, however, where the players of the SC Corinthians was inferior. In the national championship there was a new edition of the final of the previous year against Santos FC, who defeated again (1: 1, 3: 1) and thus successfully completed the title defense.

At the beginning of the 2018 season, Rio Preto had to compensate for the almost complete departure of the successful team in recent years, including that of the storm duo Millene and Adriana , who both moved to the financially stronger league rivals SC Corinthians . Nevertheless, the establishment of a new team of almost unknown talents succeeded with which Rio Preto was able to keep up with the top athletes. The offensive department, led by Letícia , was reinforced during the season by the new signing Carol . So the club reached the round of the last four in the state championship, in which it was eliminated against the eventual title winner Santos FC. In the national championship, the club advanced to the final for the third time, in which it then had to admit defeat to the favored SC Corinthians (0: 1, 0: 4). At the end of the season, the record player Jéssica de Lima ended her active career after nineteen years of membership in the club.

retreat

On December 21, 2018, the end of the cooperation between the Reguera couple and the club was announced. The club section should remain, however, whose coach João Santos was appointed, previously assistant coach of the men's team. On February 26, 2019, club president José Eduardo Rodrigues announced his club's withdrawal from professional women's football for financial reasons. In future, the club's activities will focus on the men's team and talent development. The SC Internacional team from Porto Alegre has been nominated for the vacated starting place in the Série A1 2019 .
