A women's soccer department of 1. FC Union Berlin existed for the first time from 1969 to 1971. In 1990, when the soccer players transferred from the dissolved BSG Kabelwerk Oberspree Berlin , the club again had a women's soccer department.

history

1. FC Union was one of the first clubs in the GDR to have a women's team. As early as 1968, girls who were enthusiastic about football, the majority of whom were students at the Institute for Teacher Training in Köpenick, got together to play football. On September 22, 1969, Union footballers received sportswear and balls and trained for the first time on an ancillary facility. The team was trained by coaches Bernd Müller and Bernd Vogel from the first men's team of 1. FC Union. On January 17, 1970, the women's team played a game against Union boys' team for the first time, in the following months friendly games against teams from Berlin and Tangermünde were excluded. When the GDR Football Association added women's football to the popular sports area in the summer, the women's team was forced to look for a new club, as Union, as a competitive club, was not allowed to maintain a leisure team. The soccer players joined the Oberspree cable works as a national sports community.

In 1990, with the transfer of the female soccer players from the dissolved BSG Kabelwerk Oberspree Berlin , the club again received a women's soccer department. The team took part in their first season in 1990/91 in the last GDR women's football championship . They finished eighth and qualified for the newly created second-class Oberliga Nordost (today's Regionalliga Nordost ), but did not manage to stay up in the following season. It was not until 2001 that the team rose again to the regional league. In the first season they were only penultimate, but were allowed to remain in the league due to the rise of Tennis Borussia Berlin , which was followed by a few years in the midfield of the table. In 2005, the Union team achieved the feat of being eighth in the table, 21 points ahead of ninth-placed Chemnitzer FC .

In the 2006/07 season, the team was promoted to the second Bundesliga , which had existed since 2004 as a substructure for the Bundesliga . On the last day of the match, the Union women overtook the Magdeburg FFC team by winning a direct duel and thus secured the championship in the regional league, which was no longer decisive for promotion, as the Magdeburg women had not applied for a license for the second division. In addition, the Berlin women were able to successfully defend the state cup. While in the following season the class in the northern season of the second division could be kept tight, the women did not manage to stay in the 2008/09 season.

From 2009 the team therefore played again in the Regionalliga Nordost and was initially in danger of relegation. It was not until the 2012/13 season that Union played for promotion again, which finally managed to become runner-up in 2014, as SV Eintracht Leipzig-Süd waived promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the same year the team was able to win the Berlin Cup again. However, the class could not be held, so the team played again in the third-class Regionalliga Nordost in the 2015/16 season. After a change in personnel, she was promoted to the 2nd women's Bundesliga and the NOFV regional league championship in the 2015/16 season. The Berlin Cup was also won against league competitor FC Viktoria Berlin .

After only one season, he was relegated to the regional league again. With a 1-0 victory at their direct competitor Magdeburg FFC, the Berliners secured the championship of the 2017/18 regional league season . In the qualifying round for the single-track 2nd Bundesliga , however, the Union women failed due to the second team of SGS Essen . A year later the 1. FC Union defended its championship title, but failed in the promotion games at SG 99 Andernach .

Youth teams

The second women's team started playing in the 2005/06 season and in two years made it through from the district league to the top division of Berlin - the nationwide fourth-class association league. In the 2009/10 season, the reserve rose again and played in the state league up to and including the 2012/2013 season. This season he was promoted again as a champion. Since the 2013/2014 season, the second women's team has been back in the association league.

Since the 2005/06 season, 1. FC Union Berlin has also been promoting the girls' area. The U17 age group was able to qualify for the first U-17 junior Bundesliga in 2012. The U13 and U15 are each represented in the top division of their age group. The teams of the U9 to U11 age groups are built up by partner clubs. In the 2010/11 season, all three girls' teams were Berlin champions in their age group.
