The sports club "Werder" v. 1899 e. V. , known as SV Werder , SV Werder Bremen or Werder Bremen is a sports club from Bremen . The first women's soccer team has been playing in the 2nd Bundesliga since relegation in 2019 . The team previously played in the Bundesliga for three years .

history

Beginning in the 1970s

A women's team that was founded in the early 1970s and played in the final round of the first German championship in 1974 was disbanded after a few years.

2007 to 2009: Founding and marching through in the 2nd division

It was not until the beginning of 2007 that SV Werder re-established a women's department after the Bremen Football Association asked the sports club to found it in autumn 2006 in order to curb the emigration of talented women to the area around Lower Saxony. Previously, the club had always refused to run an independent women's football department again and justified this with the lack of space on the Pauliner Marsch site .

In the 2007/08 season, a women's and a B-junior / U17 team started playing. Both the girls 'and women' s teams were formed in cooperation with the Bremen Football Association from the best performing players from Bremen and the surrounding area. Over 300 players had applied for a place in the squad. On May 8, 2007, the two teams were presented to the press. Britta and Lara Möhlmann as well as Eva-Marlen Votava, the daughters of the former Werder professionals Benno Möhlmann and Mirko Votava, belonged to the women's team . The women's team was coached this season by Frank Schwalenberg, who had already coached a Bundesliga team at FSV Frankfurt . The women's team in the Association League Bremen started with the goal of advancing to the 2nd Bundesliga within four years . The two selection teams initially played on the grounds of the University of Bremen . In the first season, the players were able to win all games of the season and had a goal difference of 162: 0.

In the promotion round to Regionalliga Nord they met Niendorfer TSV (Hamburg) (2: 1) and Ratzeburger SV (Schleswig-Holstein) (1: 1) and qualified, benefiting from a victory of Ratzeburger SV over Niendorfer TSV, for the higher league. In the following regional league season 2008/09, the Werderelf fought head-to-head race with BV Cloppenburg , which the Bremen women won by one point, and thus made it to the 2nd Bundesliga within two years . In the first round of the DFB Cup , the Bremen players managed a surprising 2-1 win against the second division club Blau-Weiß Hohen Neuendorf , but were defeated 1:10 by FCR 2001 Duisburg in the second round .

2009 to 2014: Fixed size in the 2nd Bundesliga

The promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga presented some challenges, which is why the sporting and organizational area had to reposition itself. With Lisa-Marie Scholz, Maren Wallenhorst , Lea Notthoff and Maria Doll, four experienced second division players could be won. Furthermore, the commitment of the Kenyan national player Doreen Nabwire Omondi caused media attention. The coaching team also got reinforcements for the winter break. Holger Stemmann led the Bremen women with head coach Birte Brüggemann to 7th place in the table. In the DFB Cup, after winning against ATS Buntentor (8: 0) and Blau-Weiß Hohen Neuendorf (4: 1), the team qualified for the first time for the round of 16, where they lost 5-1 to FSV Gütersloh in 2009 .

In the following three seasons Werder reached fifth place and was thus able to establish itself as the top team. In the DFB-Pokal you could qualify once for the 2nd round and twice for the round of 16 during this time. In the 2013/14 season they again achieved a new top score with third place and were also able to win the DFB Cup after victories against 1. FFC Recklinghausen (14: 1), 1. FC Lübars (2: 1) and VfL Bochum (3: 1) to penetrate the quarterfinals for the first time, where it was the end of the line against 1. FFC Frankfurt (0: 8).

2014 to 2016: Promotion to the 1st Bundesliga

After the early elimination from the DFB Cup in the second round against first division club SGS Essen (1: 5), the 2014/15 season was all the more successful. Since 1. FC Lübars had not submitted a license application for the Bundesliga and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam II is not eligible to play for the Bundesliga, Werder was able to qualify for the first division on the penultimate matchday - at that time in second place .

With the promotion came the replacement of the coach Chadia Freyhat, as the 1st Bundesliga provides for a full-time coaching post. Professional soldier Freyhat gave up the post and was replaced by Steffen Rau .

The first Bundesliga victory was achieved on the first day of the match. Against the promoted 1. FC Köln , the Bremen women won 6-2. The rest of the first half of the season was less successful, however, and no further victory could be achieved. Thus Werder wintered in 11th place. In the DFB Cup, the Bremen women reached the quarter-finals, where they lost 3 0: 3 in extra time against the reigning champions FC Bayern Munich . By the end of the season two more victories could be achieved but the 11th place in the table could not be left. Thus, after only one season, the team relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. After relegation in 2016, however, he was immediately promoted again with the 2017 championship in the 2nd Bundesliga , but separated from the promotion coach Steffen Rau. On June 26, 2017 it was announced that the former soccer player of FC Bayern Munich Carmen Roth will take over the vacant head coach position.
