The women's soccer department of SC Freiburg has existed since 1975 and consists of four teams. The first team has played in the Bundesliga again since 2011 , the second team has been part of the Regionalliga Süd since 2018 . In addition, there is a B junior women team (U-17) and a C junior women team (U-15).

history

The women's football department was founded in 1975 when the entire SpVgg Wiehre team switched to SC. In the following years one was five times South Baden master. In the final round of the German championship, however, you never got beyond the quarter-finals. In 1985 part of the team moved back to SpVgg Freiburg-Wiehre. Six years later, the SpVgg reached the promotion round to the Bundesliga. However, the board made it clear before the start of the promotion round that they would forego promotion. The team then moved back to the SC, which on July 1, 1991 re-established its women's football department. After several unsuccessful attempts, they finally made the leap into the Bundesliga in 1998 . After a year, however, you had to go down again.

Two years later one managed to rise again. Since then, the SC women have been able to establish themselves in the Bundesliga and have usually occupied safe midfield positions. In 2002 the German U-19 national team became European champions with Alexandra Stegmann from Freiburg, world champions in 2004 with Melanie Behringer from Freiburg , in 2006 with Juliane Maier from Freiburg and again in 2007 with Susanne Hartel . In 2007 Melanie Behringer became world champion with the German senior national team . In the 2009/10 season , the sport club women relegated to the second division with just four wins from 22 games and three points behind . In the following season of the 2nd Bundesliga South, the direct promotion was already assured after the 19th matchday and the 18th win of the season.

As a result, the Freiburg women managed to establish themselves again in the Bundesliga, where they achieved a solid midfield position four times in a row. After two fourth places in the two previous seasons, the 2017/18 season finally ended in third place, which is the best position in history to date. In the following season they made it into the final of the DFB Cup , where they lost 1-0 to VfL Wolfsburg .

Stages

From the 2000/01 season on, the team played in the stadium at Bergmattenhof in Sexau and from the 2006/07 season for two years in the Freiburg West Stadium . For the 2008/09 season they moved to the club's own Möslestadion , which is currently the fourth smallest stadium in the women's Bundesliga. The Schönberg Stadium of SV Blau-Weiß Wiehre Freiburg serves as a training facility ; the second women's team, the U-17 women and the U-15 women play their home games here.
