Essi Katriina Sainio (born September 9, 1986 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish football player . The midfielder plays for HJK Helsinki .

Career

She started her career at FC Kasiysi Espoo at the age of nine. After the 2005 season she moved to HJK Helsinki via FC Espoo, FC Honka Espoo . On June 5, 2006, she made her debut for the Finnish senior team against Belgium . In summer 2006 she switched to the reigning German champions 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam , where she signed a three-year contract. In August she took part in the 2006 U-20 Women's World Cup in Russia . During the tournament she broke the metatarsal and was out for several weeks. She made her debut in Turbine dress on October 11, 2006 in the UEFA Women's Cup quarter-final first leg against Brøndby IF .

In March 2007, she drove with the Finnish national team to the Algarve Cup in Portugal . In the first group game against Sweden , she kinked her left foot after eight minutes without any opposing influence. A metatarsal fracture was later diagnosed again. She celebrated her comeback on the last day of the Bundesliga at the away game in Freiburg. In 2007, Sainio was nominated for the Finnish U-23 national team. The bad luck with an injury remained true to her and she suffered another metatarsal fracture while preparing for the Nordic Cup .

It was not until October 2007 that she returned to the field. She scored her first goal for Turbine on November 18, 2007 in the game against 1. FC Saarbrücken , followed by the first goal for the national team in the friendly against Scotland on August 24, 2008. She won her first title in Germany on January 12, 2008 with the DFB indoor cup . In 2009 she became German champion with Turbine. In the DFB Cup, she brought her team through a goal (header) in the quarter-finals against VfL Sindelfingen in the semi-finals (later also the final), which however was lost against FCR 2001 Duisburg .

After the 2008/2009 season she moved to the Swedish club AIK Solna and then to the German second division club SC Freiburg for the 2010/2011 season . With Freiburg, she made it to the Bundesliga in 2011.
