The twelve teams of the current Bundesliga season took part in the tournament. The teams were divided into three groups of four teams each. Within each group, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up as well as the two group thirds with the best points reached the quarter-finals. If it was a draw from the quarter-finals after regular playing time, a nine-meter shootout followed.
Both group thirds forced the group winners into a nine-meter shootout. Essentially, Essen should have played against Wolfsburg and Potsdam against Bad Neuenahr. In order to avoid a repetition of the preliminary round games, the DFB swapped matches.
