The 2007/08 season was the 18th season of the women's Bundesliga . The season began on August 19, 2007 and ended with the last game day on June 15, 2008. Defending champion 1. FFC Frankfurt celebrated the championship for the seventh time.
During the 2007 World Cup (September 10-30, 2007), the 2007/08 season was interrupted. The players who did not go to the World Cup held a World Cup bridging tournament with their clubs .
The season
Duisburg got off to the best start of the field of twelve and won the first six games in a row. The 2-2 draw at VfL Wolfsburg meant the first loss of points, which was followed by a 0-1 home defeat against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. Frankfurt passed and went into the winter break with a point ahead. With a 4-0 win by the Frankfurt women against Duisburg, the defending champion secured the "autumn championship". When Frankfurt stumbled and suffered defeats against Bad Neuenahr and Munich, hope grew in Duisburg. But Duisburg itself could not take advantage of the mistake after a 1: 4 home defeat in the derby against Essen.
On the penultimate day of the match there was a showdown in Duisburg. Over 4,000 spectators saw a superior home team, which fell behind after 20 minutes due to a goal by Kerstin Garefrekes . Inka Grings was able to equalize after 70 minutes . No more goals were scored, so the decision was made on the last day of the match. Frankfurt didn't let anything go wrong here, leading 4-0 after 30 minutes and celebrating after the final score of 5-1.
While Wattenscheid 09 was already relegated after the third to last game day, the decision about the second relegated team was made on the last game day. Hamburger SV and 1. FC Saarbrücken met two teams with equal points. HSV had a slight advantage due to the better goal difference . The guests took the lead after 66 minutes with a goal from Selina Wagner . Four minutes later, Denise Lehmann equalized and secured her team relegation.
1. FFC Frankfurt was able to defend its title and celebrated its most successful season since 2002 with victories in the DFB Cup and the UEFA Women's Cup . The Hessians only suffered two defeats, including the first defeat against Bayern Munich since the 1991/92 season . For the fourth time in a row, FCR 2001 Duisburg was runner-up. The team put up with the surprising change of coach - Thomas Obliers resigned, Martina Voss took over - but missed the possible title by unnecessarily losing points. Inka Grings meanwhile secured the title of top scorer with 26 goals.
The 1st FFC Turbine Potsdam came in third again. With Nadine Angerer , the team lost another top performer during the winter break, but provided one of the newcomers of the season with the goal scorer Jessica Wich . A messed up second half of the season and a bad exploitation of chances prevented a better point balance. Bayern Munich was equal on points but with a goal difference that was one goal worse. The highlight of the season was the 3-2 victory over 1. FFC Frankfurt and reaching the cup semi-finals.
As in the previous year, the SC 07 Bad Neuenahr finished fifth. After an average preliminary round, the club surprisingly split from coach Dietmar Schacht . Sandra Minnert led the team through the second half of the season as a player- coach. After the long-injured Célia Okoyino da Mbabi returned , the team stabilized and was able to repeat last year's placement. The season was disappointing for VfL Wolfsburg. Despite the commitment of top-class players like Shelley Thompson or Navina Omilade , only sixth place came out. With 48 goals conceded, VfL had the fourth worst defense.
The season was unsatisfactory for SG Essen-Schönebeck as well. Despite the first victory over local rivals FCR 2001 Duisburg, only seventh place came out. Eighth was SC Freiburg, which was able to pull away from the relegation zone after a catastrophic first half of the season (only three points) and a stronger return series. Ninth place went to TSV Crailsheim.
Hamburger SV got away with a black eye. After a decent preliminary round, the team slipped back to the relegation ranks in the second half. It was only on the last day of the match that they could save themselves with a 1-1 draw against their direct rivals 1. FC Saarbrücken. The cheeky climber got himself into trouble when the suspended Julia Leykauf was used in the catch-up game against SC Freiburg (1: 1). The game was rated 2-0 for Freiburg.
The second promoted Wattenscheid 09 experienced a catastrophic season. Even the national player Kerstin Stegemann , who was signed before the season, could not prevent the team from being relegated almost continuously. Trainer Tanja Schulte had to leave after the winter break. Her successor André Birkner was only in office for a short time before Stegemann ended the season as player-coach.
