The 2008/09 season is the 19th season of the women's Bundesliga . The season began on September 6, 2008 with the early game between SC 07 Bad Neuenahr and defending champion 1. FFC Frankfurt . The last match day took place on June 7th, 2009, as a German team, FCR 2001 Duisburg , had reached the final of the UEFA Women's Cup .
The 1st FFC Turbine Potsdam secured the all-German championship title for the third time. Including the six championships won in the GDR , the turbines caught up with the previous record champions SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach . In addition to Potsdam, Bayern Munich and FCR 2001 Duisburg qualified for the UEFA Women's Champions League .
The season
The "heartbeat finale"
The Bundesliga experienced the most exciting season finale in its history in the 2008/09 season. After the penultimate matchday, three teams could win the championship. In the lead, FC Bayern Munich was tied with 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. The Brandenburg women had a goal difference three goals worse . FCR 2001 Duisburg was four points behind the top duo. Munich and Duisburg still had to face each other in a direct duel. Before the catch-up game, Potsdam and Duisburg met in the cup final , which the Duisburg women won 7-0. On June 3, 2009 the catch-up game between Munich and Duisburg took place. In front of 3,112 spectators, goals from Inka Grings (2), Simone Laudehr and Vanessa Martini brought the guests to a 4-0 victory that put the Potsdam women in first place. Duisburg moved up to one point on Potsdam and Munich.
On the final day of the match, leaders Potsdam received VfL Wolfsburg , Bayern Munich had to go to TSV Crailsheim and Duisburg met SC Freiburg at home . Should Potsdam and Munich win, Bayern would have to win one goal higher than Potsdam to win the championship. In this case, both teams would have the same goal difference, but Bayern would have scored more goals. Duisburg had to hope that the competition would slip up. For all three opponents of the championship candidates it was no longer about anything on the last day of the match. Wolfsburg and Freiburg had already secured relegation while Crailsheim was already relegated. In a survey by the DFB, eleven of the twelve Bundesliga coaches bet on Munich, only Crailsheim's coach Hubert Müller bet on Potsdam.
All three championship contenders went nervously in their games on the final day of the game. Shortly before the half-time whistle , Potsdam received a penalty that Jennifer Zietz was able to convert. At the beginning of the second half Bayern took a 2-0 lead with goals from Bianca Rech (48th minute) and Nina Aigner (51st). The Munich women were ahead. At the same time, Tabea Kemme increased to 2-0 for Potsdam, whereby the "Turbines" were again first. Anja Mittag scored the 3-0 for Potsdam in the 61st minute. In the 75th minute, Nicole Banecki again scored the 3-0 for Munich. Further goals should not fall for Bayern; rather, the team failed because of the outstanding Crailsheim goalkeeper Kim Kaller .
When the whistle in Potsdam was still five minutes to play in Crailsheim. When the final result was announced from Crailsheim, cheers broke out in the Karl Liebknecht Stadium . Duisburg's 5-0 win against Freiburg only had statistical value.
