Career

Thompson grew up in Monheim am Rhein . Her father is from Zimbabwe and her mother is South African . English was spoken in her parents' home , so Thompson, like her brother, only learned German in kindergarten .

In 1989 she and her older brother Marc started playing soccer at 1. FC Monheim . After five years she moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf and played for two years in the D-Jugend. After she was no longer allowed to play with boys in a team, she switched to Garather SV . She came to SG Essen-Schönebeck in 1999 through SVG Neuss-Weißenberg . In her last year of youth, she became Lower Rhine Champion and made the leap into the first team straight away. After eleven goals in the first half of the season, she moved to FCR Duisburg on January 1, 2001 , for whom she scored at least ten goals in each season.

On August 6, 2003 she played for the first time in the German national team . The opponents in Trier were Nigeria's selection . Between September 2003 and April 2004 she studied at Regis University in Denver . In the 2004/05 Bundesliga season , Thompson was the top scorer with 30 goals. In summer 2006 she moved to Hamburger SV . After just one season, she left the club again and moved to VfL Wolfsburg . During her time there, she works in sports marketing at Volkswagen . On October 15, 2009, Thompson was released from training and matches with immediate effect due to "irreconcilable differences" from VfL. She then continued to work for the club's marketing department until she moved to the US professional league WPS on February 19, 2010, where she signed a contract with newcomer Atlanta Beat.

For the 2010/11 season she moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where she was active for two years. At the 2011 women's soccer World Cup , she worked as the venue media officer at the Leverkusen World Cup location. On June 30, 2012 Shelley Thompson announced her move to SC 07 Bad Neuenahr on Twitter .
