The 2016/17 season was the 27th season of the Bundesliga , officially Allianz Women's Bundesliga , in women's football . The season began on September 3, 2016 and ended with the last matchday on May 21, 2017. The champions and runners-up qualify for the UEFA Women's Champions League , while the last two teams have to be relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . The defending champion was FC Bayern Munich . Newcomers from the 2nd Bundesliga 2015/16 were MSV Duisburg , which managed to get promoted again, and Borussia Mönchengladbach .

Champion was VfL Wolfsburg ahead of runner-up FC Bayern Munich. Both teams for the season 2017/18 the UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying. The newcomer from Mönchengladbach and Bayer 04 Leverkusen were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga , while the returnee from Duisburg was able to keep the class. The top scorer was again Mandy Islacker from 1. FFC Frankfurt with 19 goals.
