The Sports Club from 1912 Sodingen is a football club from the Herne district Sodingen , who in the 1950s in the Oberliga West perfectly played. The club colors are green and white. The team has been playing in the sixth class Westfalenliga since 2019 .

Emergence

The association was founded on September 14, 1912 in the mining town of Sodingen, which was incorporated into Herne in 1928. In the 1950s in particular (such as the SpVgg Erkenschwick , the Sportfreunde Katernberg or the SpVgg Herten ), it was one of the miners' associations that were said to have not suffered particularly well at the reputable DFB. The Glück-Auf stadium with 30,000 seats was built on the site of the Mont Cenis colliery in 1928 and demolished in 1975.

The "big time"

Today's venue "Am Holzplatz"

For years, SV Sodingen only played in the lower leagues until it rose several times in a row after the Second World War , so that in 1950 it played in the 2nd division West and from 1952 in the Oberliga West . This rise, reminiscent of the earlier development of Schalke , also contributed to the fact that the club became extremely popular not only in the Ruhr area , as did the fact that a "David" was preparing to reach for the stars here. Practically all players worked at the Mont Cenis colliery and without exception came from the surrounding area. The competition with the “bourgeois” local rival Westfalia Herne also nourished the image of the “Sodinger Underdog ” - and at least in the 1950s, the latter actually had the edge. The team played an uncompromising kick and rush style, paired with the unconditional commitment of all players, and had technical qualities, which is said to have prompted national coach Sepp Herberger to state that Sodingen is "the only German team that plays English".

At the end of the 1954/55 season , the protégés of coach Ludwig Tretter finished 2nd in the Oberliga West and thus qualified for the finals of the German championship, where they first defeated SSV Reutlingen 05 in a qualifying game 3-0 and then met in the group games against 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Hamburger SV and two-time German champions Viktoria 89 Berlin .

Honor roll of the team from 1954/55

The results of these games:

  • against Kaiserslautern 2: 2 and 2: 2
  • against Hamburg 0: 1 and 1: 1
  • against Berlin 5: 1 and 3: 2

In particular, the home game against the Lauterer with all their “Bern World Champions” on May 22, 1955 shows how strong the support for this district club was - even if Sodingen was occasionally mistaken for Solingen by non-residents and is still today - because of the expected rush of visitors the home game was moved to the Schalke Glückauf-Kampfbahn , where chaotic conditions arose hours before the start of the game because around 80,000 people crowded into the stadium, which only had 40,000 seats. In the end there were around 55,000 who had found entry, and the game had to be interrupted several times because the crowd was standing meters away on the field.

The kicker then wrote: “Today we saw one of the most thrilling and beautiful games in a long time, worthy of a final. Without Fritz Walter's genius, Lautern would have been overwhelmed by the storm surges of the offensive Westphalian eleven. ”After the round was over, Sodingen was third in the group with 7: 5 points behind 1. FCK (9: 3) and HSV (8: 4). In the following season, SV Sodingen, which also had several national players in its ranks, again reached a single-digit place in the table. In 1956/57 they narrowly escaped relegation: six points were deducted from SV Sodingen due to illegal cash payments to the players.
