Ralph Nelson (born August 12, 1916 in New York , † December 21, 1987 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American film and television director, producer, screenwriter and actor.

Nelson made a number of very successful films in the 1960s and 1970s, which also met with heavy criticism for their relentless portrayal of US history and the theming of the prevailing racism .

His best-known works include the feature film Lilien auf dem Felde from 1962, which was nominated for an Oscar for best feature film and with which he competed for the Golden Bear at the 1963 Berlinale . He took part in the 1968 Berlinale a second time with his film Charly . In the feature films Duel in Diablo and The Lullaby from Manslaughter , which thematize the Sand Creek Massacre , he plays minor supporting roles.

Nelson is the father of hypertext visionary Theodor Holm Nelson .
