Thomas Stewart "Tom" Udall (born May 18, 1948 in Tucson , Arizona ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the United States Senate for New Mexico since 2009 .

Tom Udall is the son of former US Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall and nephew of Congressman Mo Udall , father of politician Mark Udall .

Tom Udall graduated from Prescott College in 1970 . He then studied at the University of Cambridge in England , where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws in 1975 . This was followed by the Juris Doctor at the University of New Mexico in 1977. He was then assistant federal attorney for the district of New Mexico , which he remained until 1981; subsequently he served as chief legal advisor to the Ministry of Health and the Environment in that state. From 1991 to 1999, he succeeded Hal Stratton as Attorney General of New Mexico. From 1999 he represented the 3rd congressional constituency of his state in the US House of Representatives , after he had defeated the Republican mandate holder William T. Redmond with 53 to 43 percent of the vote in the 1998 election . He was last re-elected in 2006 with 75% of the vote.

In November 2007, he announced his candidacy for the US Senate in the November 2008 election . This was the first time that two first-degree cousins ​​ran for Senate elections: Mark Udall ran for the seat in the neighboring state of Colorado at the same time . In the election on November 4, 2008, Udall won the election as US Senator against Republican Steve Pearce , and his seat resigned he joined his cousin Mark - who was elected Senator in Colorado - in January 2009. In the 2014 election he was confirmed against the Republican Allen Weh .

In the Senate, Udall is a member of the Trade, Science and Transport Committee , the Environment Committee and the Rules of Procedure committee .

In March 2019, Udall became the first Senate Democrat to announce that he would not run again in the upcoming 2020 election. His mandate ends on January 3, 2021.
