Antonio Joseph (born August 25, 1846 in Taos , Mexico , † April 19, 1910 in Ojo Caliente , New Mexico ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1895 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives .

Live and act

Born in what is now Taos County , Antonio Joseph attended Lux's Academy in Taos, Bishop Lammy's School in Santa Fe , Webster College in Missouri, and Bryant and Stratton's Commercial College in St. Louis . Then he worked in trade. From 1878 to 1880 he was a district judge in Taos County.

Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1882 he became a member of the House of Representatives for the New Mexico Territory. After the congressional elections of 1884 he moved as a delegate to the US House of Representatives, where he replaced Francisco Antonio Manzanares on March 4, 1885 . After he was re-elected in the following congressional elections, Joseph was able to complete a total of five terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . In 1894 he was defeated by Thomas B. Catron . He was then a member between 1896 and 1898 and President of the territorial senate in 1898. As a result, he returned to his private business, which in the meantime also included the hotel industry. Antonio Joseph had also become a major landowner in his homeland. He died in April 1910 and was buried in Santa Fe.
