Pedro Perea

Pedro Perea (born April 22, 1852 in Bernalillo , New Mexico , † January 11, 1906 there ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1901 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Pedro Perea was a cousin of Francisco Perea , who had represented the New Mexico Territory in the US House of Representatives between 1863 and 1865. Pedro attended St. Michael's College in Santa Fe , Georgetown University in Washington and then, until 1871, Saint Louis University in Missouri . After that he worked in agriculture and mainly in sheep breeding. He was also involved in banking and became president of the First National Bank of Santa Fe . He held this office between 1890 and 1894.

Political career

Perea was a member of the Republican Party . In 1889, 1891, and 1895 he was a member of the Territorial Council of New Mexico. In 1896 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , where William McKinley was nominated as the party's presidential candidate. In 1898 Perea was elected as a delegate of his territory to the US House of Representatives, where he replaced Harvey Butler Fergusson on March 4, 1899 . Since he refused to run again in 1900, Pedro Perea could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1901 .

After serving in the House of Representatives, Perea returned to his banking and ranching business interests. In the year he died, he was appointed Territory Insurance Commissioner. Pedro Perea died in June 1906 in his birthplace.
