Steven Harvey Schiff (born March 18, 1947 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 25, 1998 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ) was an American politician . Between 1989 and 1998 he represented the first constituency of the state of New Mexico in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

Steven Schiff attended the University of Chicago until 1968 and then studied law at the law school of the University of New Mexico until 1972 . After being admitted to the bar, he started working in his new profession. From 1969 to 1998, until his death, he was a member of the National Guard's air force. Between 1972 and 1977 he served as the assistant district attorney in Bernalillo County . He was then one of the lawyers for the city of Albuquerque and from 1979 to 1981 advisor to the police in that city. From 1980 to 1988 he was a district attorney in Bernalillo County.

Political career

Steven Schiff became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1988 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he replaced Manuel Lujan on January 3, 1989 . After being re-elected in subsequent elections, Schiff remained in Congress until his death from skin cancer on March 25, 1998 . The due by-elections were then won by Heather Wilson .
