William Henry Andrews

William Henry Andrews (born January 14, 1846 in Youngsville , Warren County , Pennsylvania , † January 16, 1919 in Carlsbad , New Mexico ) was an American politician . Between 1905 and 1912 he was the last delegate to represent New Mexico in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

William Andrews attended the public schools in his home country and then worked in commerce in Cincinnati , Meadville and Titusville between 1880 and 1890 . He also got into the railroad business, where he was supposed to be the president of the Santa Fe Central Railway Company .

Political career

Andrews became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1889 and 1891 he was party chairman in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1889 to 1893 and, in 1895, was elected to the State Senate. In 1900 he moved to the New Mexico Territory, where he dedicated himself to mining in Sierra County . Andrews also continued his political career in his new home. He soon became one of the leading politicians in the territory . Between 1903 and 1904 he was a member of the Territorial Government Council.

In the congressional elections of 1904 he was elected a delegate for his territory to the US House of Representatives. There he replaced Bernard Shandon Rodey on March 4, 1905 , against whom he had prevailed in his party's primary elections. After he had been re-elected in 1906, 1908 and 1910, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 7, 1912. That day, the mandate expired because New Mexico had joined the United States as a regular state . Andrews had been very committed to joining. In return, he hoped to be elected to the US Senate . However, this project failed due to resistance within his party.

Another résumé

Andrews was involved in the oil business in southern New Mexico since 1912. Meanwhile, there were allegations from Pennsylvania where it was found that approximately $ 300,000 related to Andrews' railroad company had disappeared. His business was not very successful after 1912. He died penniless in 1919 and was buried in Titusville.
