Francisco Antonio Manzanares

Francisco Antonio Manzanares (born January 25, 1843 in Abiquiú , Mexico , † September 17, 1904 in Las Vegas , New Mexico ) was an American politician . Between 1884 and 1885 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

Francisco Manzanares, who was born in what is now Rio Arriba County , first attended the Spanish-speaking schools in his homeland and only learned English later. In 1863 and 1864 he studied at Saint Louis University in Missouri . He then started working for Chick, Browne and Co. in Kansas City . He later became a co-owner of the company, for which he worked in various areas in the Midwestern and western United States. So he came back to the New Mexico Territory. There he helped to set up the infrastructure and was involved in the establishment of several banks.

Political career

Francisco Manzanares became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1882 he ran for the office of delegate to the US House of Representatives. In this election he was defeated by Tranquilino Luna . But Manzanares objected to the election result, which was approved in March 1884. Thus he was able to represent his territory as a delegate in Congress between March 5, 1884 and March 3, 1885 . In 1884 he decided not to run again.

After the end of his brief tenure in Congress, Manzanares returned to his business interests. Between 1896 and 1897 he was a member of the district council in San Miguel County ( Board of County Commissioners ). Francisco Manzanares died in September 1904 and was buried in Las Vegas.
