Rio Arriba County is a county in the north of the US state New Mexico with 40,246 inhabitants. The Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation is in the county. The county seat is Tierra Amarilla .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 41,190 people. There were 15,044 households and 10,816 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.62% White, 0.35% African American, 13.88% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, and 25.62% other races Groups; 3.28% were from two or more races. 72.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
