Rio Arriba County is a county in the north of the US state New Mexico with 40,246 inhabitants. The Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation is in the county. The county seat is Tierra Amarilla .

The county has a land area of 15,171 square kilometers and a water area of 99 square kilometers. The size is comparable to Thuringia . The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Taos County , Mora County , Santa Fe County , Los Alamos County , Sandoval County , San Juan County , Archuleta County, Colorado, and Conejos County, Colorado.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 41,190 people. There were 15,044 households and 10,816 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.62% White, 0.35% African American, 13.88% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, and 25.62% other races Groups; 3.28% were from two or more races. 72.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 15,044 households, 36.90% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 48.80% were married couples living together, 15.90% were single mothers. 28.10% were not families. 23.50% were single households and 7.80% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.19 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.60% of residents under 18 years of age, 8.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.70 males.
