Colfax County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . The county has 13,750 residents. The county seat is Raton .
geography
The county is located in the northeast of the state on the border with Colorado . The largest river in the county is the Canadian River . It takes its name from French explorers who believed the river flowed into Canada . The county covers an area of 9,759 square kilometers; 29 square kilometers (0.30 percent) of this is water. The county is bordered clockwise by Taos Counties , Mora Counties , Harding Counties, and Union Counties in New Mexico, and Las Animas Counties and Costilla Counties in Colorado.

Colfax County was named after Schuyler Colfax , the 17th Vice President of the United States (1869–1873).
Historical objects
- In Raton is the Raton Downtown Historic District . It stretches across the village between Rio Grande , Clark Street , 1st Street and 3rd Street , and contains 95 buildings. In 1977 the area was listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP ID 77000923).
One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Raton Pass . A total of 27 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 14,189 people. There were 5,821 households and 3,975 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.50% White, 0.32% African American, 1.47% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 12.80% other races Groups; 3.59% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 47.49% of the population.
Of the 5,821 households, 30.30% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.80% were married couples living together, 10.30% were single mothers. 31.70% were not families. 27.70% are single households and 11.90% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.10% residents under 18 years of age, 6.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 16.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 102.70 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,744 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,827. Males had a median income of $ 26,736 versus $ 19,644 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,418. 14.80% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. 21.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.00% were 65 years of age or older.
