The county is located in southeast New Mexico, borders Texas to the south and covers an area of ​​10,872 square kilometers; 40 square kilometers (0.37 percent) of this is water. The county is bordered clockwise by the counties: Otero County , Chaves County , Lea County, and in Texas: Loving County , Reeves County, and Culberson Counties .

The county had a population of 51,658 as of the 2000 census . There were 19,379 households and 14,069 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.34% White, 1.56% African American, 1.25% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, and 17.67% other races Groups; 2.64% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 38.76% of the population.
