Socorro County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . 17,866 people live here. The county seat is Socorro .

The county covers an area of 17,220 square kilometers; 6 square kilometers of this are water. The county borders the counties in New Mexico in a clockwise direction: Cibola County , Valencia County , Torrance County , Lincoln County , Sierra County, and Catron County .

The county had a population of 18,078 as of the 2000 census . There were 6,675 households and 4,492 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.87% White, 0.64% African American, 10.92% Native American, 1.14% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 20.10% other races Groups; 4.28% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 48.73% of the population.
Of the 6,675 households, 33.80% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 48.40% were married couples living together, 13.30% were single mothers. 32.70% were not families. 26.80% were single households and 8.20% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.20.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.40% of residents under 18 years of age, 12.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.10% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 103.30 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 103.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 23,439 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,544. Males had a median income of $ 28,490 versus $ 22,482 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,826. 31.70% of the population and 24.10% of families are below the poverty line. 43.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 24.30% were 65 years of age or older.
