Los Alamos County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . The only city in the county and seat of the county seat is Los Alamos .

With an area of 283 square kilometers, the county is the smallest in the state. The county is bordered by the Santa Clara Indian Reservation , the San Ildefonson Indian Reservation, and the Bandelier National Monument . The county borders in a clockwise direction on the counties: Rio Arriba County , Santa Fe County, and Sandoval County .

In addition to the Bandelier National Monument, another place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory . A total of 12 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

The county had a population of 18,343 as of the 2000 census . There were 7,497 households and 5,337 families. The population density was 65 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.26% White, 0.37% African American, 0.58% Native American, 3.78% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 2.70% other races Groups; 2.28% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.75% of the population.
Of the 7,497 households, 33.50% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 62.70% were married couples living together, 5.70% were single mothers. 28.80% were not families. 24.90% were single households and 6.70% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.80% residents under 18 years of age, 4.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 30.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 101.40 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 99.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 78,993 , and the median income for a family is $ 90,032. Males had a median income of $ 70,063 versus $ 40,246 for females. The per capita income was $ 34,646. 2.90% of the population and 1.90% of families are below the poverty line. 1.80% of these were under 18 years of age and 4.70% were 65 years of age or older.
