Chaves County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . The county has 65,645 residents and an area of 15,734 square kilometers. The county seat and largest city in the county is Roswell . The county was named after the politician José Francisco Chaves .

In New Mexico, the county is bordered clockwise by the counties: De Baca County , Roosevelt County , Lea County , Eddy County , Otero County, and Lincoln County .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 61,382 people. There were 22,561 households and 16,085 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.95% White, 1.97% African American, 1.13% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 21.25% other races Groups; 3.12% came from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 43.83% of the population.
Of the 22,561 households, 35.60% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 52.70% were married couples living together, 13.70% were single mothers. 28.70% were not families. 24.80% were single households and 11.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.17.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.10% residents under the age of 18, 9.40% between the ages of 18 and 24, 25.30% between the ages of 25 and 44, and 21.50% between the ages of 45 and 64 14.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.90 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,513 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,532. Males had a median income of $ 26,896 versus $ 21,205 for females.
