The county covers an area of 8,925 square kilometers; of which 1 square kilometer is water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Grant County , Luna County , Chihuahua (state, Mexico), Sonora (state, Mexico), Cochise County (Arizona), and Greenlee County (Arizona).

The county had a population of 5,932 as of the 2000 census . There were 2,152 households and 1,542 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.8% White, 0.4% African American, 0.8% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 11.9% from other races; 2.9% were from two or more races. 56.0% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,152 households, 37.5% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.8% were married couples living together, 13.6% were single mothers. 28.3% were not families. 25.3% were single households and 10.7% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.29 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 31.7% of residents under 18 years of age, 7.8% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.2% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.7% between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.0 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,819 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,552. Males had a median income of $ 25,960 versus $ 19,531 women.
