The Greenlee County is a county in the US state of Arizona to the United States . The county seat is Clifton .

Greenlee County lies within Arizona in the southeast and shares a border with the state of New Mexico on the eastern edge . It has a total area of ​​4786 square kilometers, including three square kilometers of water. Greenlee is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Apache County , Catron County, New Mexico, Grant County, New Mexico, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, Cochise County, and Graham County .

The poorly populated Greenlee County is combined with the neighboring Graham County to the west by the United States Census Bureau to form the Safford Micropolitan Statistical Area .

history

Greenlee County was formed on March 10, 1909 and named after the settler pioneer Mason Greenlee (also Masin Greenlee). It was established as Arizona's 14th County by splitting off part of Graham County, which opposed the reorganization.

Ten of the county's structures and sites are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of May 5, 2020, including the Clifton Townsite Historic District , Park Avenue Bridge, and Dell Potter Ranch House .

The Park Avenue Bridge over the San Francisco River at Clifton has been registered as a structure in the NRHP since September 1988.

According to the 2000 census , Greenley County had 8,547 people; 3117 households and 2266 families were counted. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. 3744 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 74.2 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 1.7 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 20.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 3.5 percent said they came from several races. 43.1 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 25.2 percent of residents said they spoke Spanish at home.

Of the 3,117 households, 39.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers, and 27.3 percent were non-families. 24.5 percent were single households and 7.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size 3.26.

The population was distributed among 31.7 percent under 18 years, 7.5 percent from 18 to 24 years, 28.2 percent from 25 to 44 years, 22.6 percent from 45 to 64 years and 9.9 percent from 65 years or older. The mean age ( median ) was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 109.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 108.0 males.

The median income for a household (median) was 39 384  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 43,523. Males had a median income of $ 38,952 and females $ 23,333. The per capita income was $ 15,814. 8.0 percent of families and 9.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
