The Apache County is a county in the northeast of the state of Arizona to the United States . The county seat is in St. Johns .

The county has an area of 29,056 square kilometers, including 35 square kilometers of water. Most of the area is also part of the Navajo Nation Reservation .
history
The county was formed on February 24, 1879 and named after the Apache tribal group .
32 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 1, 2020), including the Casa Malpais , the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site , the Navajo Nation Council Chamber and three other objects from National Historic Landmarks .

According to the 2000 census , Apache County had 69,423 people. There were 19,971 households and 15,257 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 19.50% White, 0.25% African American, 76.88% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 1.75% other races Groups; 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.49% percent of the population.
Of the 19,971 households, 43.80% percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 49.30% percent were married couples living together, 21.40% percent were single mothers, 23.60% percent were non-families. 21.20% were single households and 6.90% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 3.41 and the average family size was 4.04.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 38.50% of residents under 18 years of age, 9.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.10% between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 8.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 98.20 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 23,344 , and the median income for a family is $ 26,315. Males had a median income of $ 30,182 versus $ 22,312 for females. The per capita income was $ 8,986. 37.80% of the population and 33.50% of families are below the poverty line. 42.80% of them are under 18 years of age and 36.50% are 65 years of age or older.

There are three parishes in Apache County, one city and two towns . For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau maintains 36 census-designated places that are subordinate to the county and are not self-governing. Like the Unincorporated Communities, these are unincorporated areas.
