The county has a total area of 23,891 square kilometers, including 55 square kilometers of water. The Western Canal runs through the county .
history
Maricopa County was formed on February 12, 1871 and named after the Maricopa .
411 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of May 6, 2020, including the Gatlin Site , the Pueblo Grande Ruin and Irrigation Sites and Taliesin West have the status of National Historic Landmarks .

According to the 2000 census , Maricopa County had 3,072,149 people. There were 1,132,886 households and 763,565 families. The population density was 129 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.35% White, 3.73% African American, 1.85% Native American, 2.16% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, and 11.86% other races Groups; 2.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 24.85% percent of the population.
Of the 1,132,886 households, 33.00% percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.60% percent were married couples living together, 10.70% percent were single mothers, 32.60% percent were non-families. 24.50% were single households and 7.90% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.21.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.00% residents under 18 years of age, 10.20% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 100.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,358 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,827. Males had a median income of $ 36,858 versus $ 28,703 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,251. 11.70% of the population and 8.00% of families are below the poverty line. 15.40% of them are under 18 years of age and 7.40% are 65 years of age or older.

The county has become internationally known through its Sheriff Joe Arpaio , who from 1992 to 2016 led the prisons he administered with unusual methods that his political opponents (the office of the 'Sheriff' is an electoral office) described as inhuman.
According to media information, a real estate company owned by Microsoft founder Bill Gates acquired an area of around one hundred square kilometers west of Phoenix on the northern edge of Interstate 10 in the fall of 2017 . A large city based on the concept of a Smart City called Belmont with around 80,000 residential units is to be built there. It is to be developed through Interstate 11 to Las Vegas , which is currently under construction and which will run centrally through the area.
